President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her historic election as the seventh secretary general of the Commonwealth, marking her as the first Ghanaian to hold this prestigious position.
In a message on the X platform, the president expressed pride in Botchwey’s selection, which he said reflects both her unwavering dedication to service and the high regard in which Ghana is held on the global stage.
“Today, I feel a deep sense of pride and joy in congratulating Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her election as the next and 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth,” President Akufo-Addo stated.
“Her selection speaks to the strength of her character and her dedication to service, as well as to the esteem in which our nation, Ghana, is held amongst her peers.”
Reflecting on her distinguished career, Akufo-Addo praised Botchwey’s contributions as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, commending her for her commitment to unity and cooperation.
“For years, I have watched her serve Ghana, Africa and the international community with unshakeable commitment and grace. Her work…is a testament to her devotion to bridging divides and building meaningful partnerships.”
The President also extended his appreciation to his fellow Commonwealth leaders, recognizing their confidence in Botchwey’s ability to champion the values of the organization. “To my fellow Heads of State and Government, I express my heartfelt gratitude for this resounding vote of confidence in Ghana’s candidate,” he said.
“In choosing her, you have placed your trust in a passionate advocate for our shared values.”
Akufo-Addo further honoured the outgoing secretary general, Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, KC, for her dedication, extending well-wishes for her future.
He also expressed thanks to Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa of Samoa for hosting the delegations at the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
As Ayorkor Botchwey assumes her new role, the president assured her of Ghana’s continued support.
“As Hon. Ayorkor Botchwey steps into this new chapter, I extend the unwavering support of the people of Ghana. We all look forward to the brighter, more resilient Commonwealth that she will help to build, one rooted in the values we cherish,” President Akufo-Addo concluded.
